Microneedling Facial for First-Timers: What to Expect
By Davine Spa Inc | September 9, 2026
People tell me all the time that my space feels super clean, calm, and professional, and that I talk them through everything. If you’re nervous about your first microneedling facial, that’s normal. The good news is it’s usually very straightforward. Microneedling uses a motorized device with tiny needles to stimulate collagen. Plan for mild redness, warmth, and little pinpoint sensations that can last about 24 to 72 hours. I’ll walk you through prep, what it feels like in the moment, and exactly how to take care of your skin afterward, especially here in Bay Ridge where sun and coastal wind still matter even in September.

Quick reality check: you’re not “out of commission.” Most people need minimal social downtime, usually 1 to 3 days, and your glow builds over the next few weeks.
Prep for microneedling in Bay Ridge: the 7-day and 24-hour checklist
I’m big on making sure you feel prepared. One of my first-time microneedling clients said my directions made them feel ready for aftercare, and that’s exactly the goal. Here’s how I generally recommend you prep so your skin behaves well and you heal cleanly.
7 days before
- Pause retinoids and strong active acids. If you’re unsure what counts, tell me what you’re using and I’ll help you sort it out.
- Avoid starting new products “just to get ready.” Simple is better right now.
- If you take blood-thinning medications or supplements, let me know before we start. I can’t advise on medication changes, but I can tell you how it may affect sensitivity and pinpoint bleeding.
24 hours before
- Skip heavy alcohol and anything that tends to flush you.
- No sunbathing or intentional tanning. Sun-stressed skin is harder to calm down afterward.
- Avoid waxing in the area we’re treating.
The day of
- Come in with clean, makeup-free skin.
- Plan your schedule like you might be pink afterward. If you’ve got a long subway ride, try to avoid rush-hour if you can. Being hot and crowded tends to feel extra annoying on fresh skin.
- Tell me what your skin goal is: acne scarring, large pores, fine lines, uneven texture, or old hyperpigmentation. Your goal drives how I approach the session.
Busy schedule note: most microneedling facial appointments are designed to be efficient. You’re usually in and out in about 30 to 60 minutes in-clinic, which is why so many parents and commuters fit it into real life.
Your microneedling facial, step by step (and what it actually feels like)
When you walk in, I keep things calm and private. People mention feeling comfortable quickly, and that’s not an accident. I explain what I’m doing, I check in often, and I don’t rush you through questions.
1) Quick consult and skin check
I’ll look at your skin in good lighting and ask about your current products, sensitivity, and your main “I want this to change” concern. If you’re nervous, say it. I’d rather know so I can slow the pace and talk you through sensations.
2) Cleansing and prep
I cleanse your skin, prep the area, and then we use topical numbing cream. Numbing is standard for microneedling. We let it sit so you’re not white-knuckling the whole appointment.
3) The microneedling passes
This is where most first-timers are surprised. You’ll feel a fast, light “pinpoint” sensation and some warmth. Around bony areas, it can feel a little sharper. I adjust pressure and I keep checking in. If you need a quick pause, you get it.
“Lisa gave me my first microneedling treatment and it was an excellent experience. The space is lovely and the bedside manner phenomenal.”

4) Finishing steps and aftercare directions
Once we’re done, I’ll go over your aftercare clearly. You won’t leave guessing. If you’re heading back out into Brooklyn daylight, I’ll remind you about sunscreen and how to keep heat and sweat from dragging out redness.
Redness, texture, and timing: the first 72 hours after microneedling
Right after your microneedling facial, it’s normal to look pink to red and feel warm, like a mild sunburn. Some people get mild swelling. Most of that settles in 1 to 3 days. The bigger changes, the collagen-driven smoothing and firming, build over weeks and tend to show best after a series.
My aftercare checklist (keep it simple)
- Use a gentle cleanser and skip actives for a few days.
- No makeup for 24 to 48 hours. If you absolutely have to be on camera, ask me what I think is realistic for your skin.
- Strict SPF every morning. Bay Ridge’s coastal climate can trick you into thinking the sun is “soft, ” especially in September. It’s not.
- Avoid pools, saunas, and heavy sweating for 3 to 7 days.
- Keep your hands off your face. No picking at dryness or flaking.
If you want an easy post-appointment plan, keep it low-sweat. A calm walk near the Bay Ridge Promenade is great. Heat and friction are usually what make redness hang around longer.
When to reach out: prolonged bleeding, severe pain, signs of infection, or any reaction that feels unusual for you. Don’t wait it out quietly.
My Bay Ridge microneedling tips that make first sessions easier
Here are the little things that make a big difference for first-timers, especially if you’re coming from Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Sunset Park, Borough Park, or even Coney Island and you’ve got a commute afterward.
Book around heat. If you know you run warm, try not to schedule right before you have to hustle, climb stairs, or squeeze into a packed train.
Say what you’re feeling in the moment. People tell me they relax faster when I talk them through the service. I can only do that if you tell me where you’re tense or extra sensitive.
Plan for a series if you’re chasing real change. One review said a few microneedling sessions can change your skin. That’s the pattern I see too. Collagen doesn’t rush.
“A few micro needling sessions here will change your skin!!!”

If you found me searching facials near me or hydrafacials near me, you’re in the right place if you want a quiet, one-on-one appointment where I take my time and you don’t feel rushed. And if you’re also the person who searches waxing near me or brazillian waxing near me, I can keep your self-care in one spot so you’re not bouncing between places.

Microneedling FAQs I get every week in Brooklyn
Does microneedling face treatment hurt?
Most first-timers describe it as prickly and warm, not unbearable. I use topical numbing cream as a standard step, and I adjust pressure based on your sensitivity, especially around bony areas.
How long does redness last after a microneedling face treatment?
Redness usually lasts 1 to 3 days. Some people calm down within 24 hours, and others stay pink closer to the 72-hour mark, especially if their skin is reactive.
How should I prepare for my first microneedling face treatment?
Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. I generally recommend avoiding retinoids and strong active acids for about a week, skipping heavy alcohol and sun exposure for 24 hours, and avoiding waxing in the area we’re treating.
When can I wear makeup after microneedling?
Plan on waiting 24 to 48 hours. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable, and makeup brushes and sponges aren’t as clean as we think they are.
Is microneedling face treatment safe for sensitive or mature skin?
Often, yes, but the approach matters. I take a close look at your skin, talk through your history of sensitivity, and keep aftercare simple. If you’re prone to irritation, you’ll want to be extra consistent with gentle products and SPF.
What are the main microneedling benefits?
Microneedling benefits include collagen stimulation and smoother-looking texture over time. People commonly do it to soften fine lines, reduce the look of large pores, and improve acne scarring. Results build gradually over weeks, and a series tends to show the biggest change.
Do you do microneedling scalp treatments too?
Microneedling scalp is a different service than a microneedling facial. If scalp concerns are your focus, tell me what you’re noticing and what you’re using now, and I’ll let you know what options make sense in our space.
